Shine A Light: Field Recordings from the Great American Railroad
"Shine A Light" is a collection of classics recorded during a 65-hour trip to the United States on the Texas Eagle train service. It contains songs originally made famous by Hank Williams, Lead Belly, The Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, Glen Campbell, Gordon Lightfoot and other great artists. Like many British musicians before him, Billy Bragg, singer-songwriter, political activist and historian of music has never made any secret of his obsession with the songs and mythology of the Americas. With his friend and collaborator, the singer-songwriter Joe Henry, has made an album that focuses on the role that the railway played in the spread of the songs that gave birth to the era of rock and roll.
